In the Kokinshū (Collection of Japanese Poems from Ancient and Modern Times; 905), the kerria flower is described as heralding the end of spring, as it blooms after plum trees, cherry trees, and wisteria. At the time, kerria yellow was the nobility’s preferred shade of yellow.
