Introduced from China in the 8th century, during the Nara period, the chrysanthemum was initially used for its medicinal and ornamental properties. This flower quickly became a symbol of longevity and nobility, to the point of becoming the official emblem of the Japanese imperial family. The chrysanthemum is also a ritual flower, offered to ancestors and used to celebrate weddings.

The chrysanthemum also has its own festival, “Choyo no Sekku,” celebrated on September 9. It was once customary during this festival to drink sake infused with chrysanthemum petals to ward off evil spirits.
