Located on the southern coast of the Kansai region, Wakayama prefecture lies between forested mountains and shores bordered by the Pacific Ocean. Its mild climate and fertile soils make it an ideal region for the production of fruit, refined condiments and deeply-flavored gastronomic specialties.

Wakayama is renowned above all for its ume plums, used to prepare umeboshi, tangy, pickled plums, as well as umeshu, a sweet, fragrant liqueur much appreciated in Japan. The region is also the birthplace of Yuasa shoyu , considered one of Japan's finest, thanks to craftsmanship handed down over 750 years.

As for fruit, Wakayama is the leading producer of mikan mandarins, juicy, sweet citrus fruits that embody the mildness of the local climate. Wakayama is also known for its persimmon, which is particularly sweet and popular in autumn.

Finally, Wakayama's coastline offers an abundance of seafood, including Katsuura tuna, prized for its tender, flavorful flesh. The region is also a major producer of katsuobushi (dried and fermented bonito), an essential ingredient in traditional Japanese cuisine.
