Located on the southern coast of the Kansai region, Wakayama Prefecture is nestled between forested mountains and coastlines bordering the Pacific Ocean. Its mild climate and fertile soil make it an ideal region for producing fruit, refined condiments, and gourmet specialties with rich flavors.

Wakayama is best known for its ume plums, used to make umeboshi—tart pickled plums—as well as umeshu, a sweet and fragrant liqueur highly prized in Japan. The region is also the birthplace of Yuasa shoyu , considered one of the best in Japan, thanks to artisanal expertise passed down for over 750 years.

When it comes to fruit, Wakayama is the leading producer of mikan mandarins, juicy and sweet citrus fruits that embody the mildness of the local climate. It is also known for its kaki (persimmons), which are particularly sweet and enjoyed in the fall.

Finally, Wakayama’s coastline offers an abundance of seafood, notably Katsuura tuna, prized for its tender and flavorful flesh. The region is also a major producer of katsuobushi (dried and fermented bonito), an essential ingredient in traditional Japanese cuisine.
