Ippodo's origins go back more than three centuries, to 1717, when Rihei Watanabe opened a store called Omiya to sell tea and ceramics. In 1846, the store was renamed Ippodo, meaning "to preserve". The name comes from Prince Yamashina, who appreciated Ippodo tea and wanted the store to preserve a tradition: providing high-quality tea. Ippodo continues to adapt to changing times, but has remained true to high-quality Japanese tea ever since.
