This unique tea is created by sprinkling matcha over genmaicha, offering a distinctive emerald infusion color. Genmaicha and matcha are among Japan's most popular green teas. Genmaicha is made by blending green tea with puffed rice grains, giving it a naturally sweet, nutty taste. Its origins can be traced back to the Japanese working class, where tea, precious and rare, was mixed with rice to extend its use. Matcha is a green tea powder with an umami and slightly sweet taste. Traditionally prepared by whisking with water, it adds a slight bitterness and umami to genmaicha, balancing out its flavors.
