For the trim
Instructions
Heat the vegetable oil in a frying pan over medium heat. Sauté the onion and carrot until tender. Stir in the cooked rice, mix well, then add the ketchup and soy sauce. Sauté until the rice is evenly coated. Set aside.
In a bowl, beat the eggs with the milk and a pinch of salt. Melt the butter in a non-stick frying pan over medium heat. Pour half the egg mixture into the pan and spread evenly. Cook until the omelette is still slightly runny in the center.
Place half the sautéed rice in the center of the omelet. Gently fold over the edges of the omelette to cover the rice and slide onto a plate with a spatula.
- Decorate the Omurice with ketchup by drawing designs or writing personalized messages. Add a sprig of parsley for an elegant finishing touch.
Recipe notes
Variants & Tips for a Perfect Omurice
Rice and condiments :
Choice of rice: Choose Koshihikari or other short-grain rice for a perfect, fluffy texture.
Japanese ketchup: Use a lightly sweetened Japanese ketchup for authentic flavor. If you use a classic ketchup, add a pinch of sugar for a similar flavor.
Customization and presentation :
Creative presentation: Decorate the omelette with ketchup drawings for a playful touch, ideal for children.
Gourmet tip: Add a knob of butter to the hot omelette just before serving for an extra touch of deliciousness.
Ideas for variations :
Omurice fluffy: Prepare a slightly drooling omelette and place it on the rice. It will melt gently when opened, providing a melt-in-the-mouth texture.
Curry omurice: Season rice with curry spices for a spicy, different flavor.
Cheese omelette: Add melted cheese inside or on top of the omelette for an even richer, creamier dish.
Origins of Omurice
Omurice originated in the early 20ᵉ century, in Japanese restaurants influenced by Western cuisine. This dish is part of the "yōshoku" category, which refers to Western dishes adapted to Japanese tastes.
A historical and symbolic dish:
Opening up to the West: Omurice reflects Japan's opening to Western culture at the end of the XIXᵉ century.
Creation: The Renga-tei restaurant in Tokyo is often cited as the place of origin of this dish.
A popular success: Initially conceived as a quick, economical meal, it has become a family meal classic and a particularly popular specialty with children.
