Hojicha Latte is a smooth, comforting drink made from hojicha, a roasted green tea with a slightly smoky, woody flavor. Blended with milk, this tea transforms into a warm, creamy beverage, ideal for relaxing. Unlike matcha, which has a fresh, herbaceous taste, hojicha offers a softer, gentler experience, making it an excellent choice for those looking for an alternative to classic green tea.

Ingredients
- 1 tablespoon hojicha powder (or 2-3 teaspoons loose hojicha leaves)
- 250 ml milk (cow's milk or plant milk: almond, soy, oat)
-
1 to 2 teaspoons sugar (optional, adjust to taste)
- 1/2 teaspoon vanilla (optional, for a fragrant touch)
- A little milk foam (optional, for a creamier effect)
Instructions
If you're using loose hojicha leaves, infuse them in 50 ml of hot water (approx. 80°C) for 2-3 minutes. Strain the leaves. If using hojicha powder, place in a small cup or bowl.
In a small saucepan, heat the milk over medium heat without boiling. You can also use a milk frother for a lighter, airier texture. If you wish to add sugar or vanilla, stir them into the milk while it's still hot.
Pour the hot milk into the cup containing the hojicha powder (or add the brewed tea if you've used leaves). Stir well so that the milk mixes perfectly with the hojicha.
For a creamier effect, use a milk frother to froth the milk before pouring it into your cup.
- Serve immediately. You can add a little milk foam on top and, if you like, a pinch of cinnamon or hojicha powder for decoration.
Recipe notes
Sweet variation: Add a little maple syrup or honey to naturally sweeten your hojicha latte.
Vegan: Use a plant-based milk (almond, soy, oat) for a dairy-free version.
Garnish: Add a pinch of hojicha powder to the top of the mousse for an aesthetic touch and extra flavour.
This Hojicha Latte is perfect for those who enjoy soothing, lightly sweetened hot drinks, offering a different experience from the traditional matcha latte.
Hojicha: a unique and soothing green tea
Hojicha is a unique Japanese green tea, recognizable by its light brown color and distinctive toasted aroma. Unlike other green teas such as matcha or sencha, hojicha is made from green tea leaves that are roasted at high temperatures, usually in a ceramic pot. This roasting process, often carried out on bancha (late-harvested green tea) or kukicha (tea made from the stems and twigs of the tea plant) leaves, gives hojicha its slightly smoky, woody flavor, with notes of hazelnut and caramel.
Origin and history
Hojicha is a relatively recent creation in the world of Japanese tea, introduced in the 1920s in Kyoto. This tea was born of a desire to use inferior or surplus tea leaves, roasting them to improve their flavor. It quickly became popular for its mild taste and low caffeine content, making it suitable for evening drinking or for children.
Taste and Characteristics
Hojicha is distinguished by its aromatic profile:
Toasty, slightly smoky notes, sometimes reminiscent of coffee or cocoa.
An almost total absence of bitterness, thanks to the roasting process which reduces tannins.
Reduced caffeine content, making it a soothing drink ideal for relaxation.
These qualities make hojicha a versatile tea, used both as a hot or cold drink and as an ingredient in desserts, lattes and even ice creams.
Hojicha in Japan and around the world
In Japan, hojicha is appreciated for its simplicity and comfort. It is often served at family dinners or in restaurants, and is a perfect accompaniment to Japanese dishes, thanks to its non-intrusive taste. In the West, its popularity has recently exploded, thanks in particular to the craze for Japanese teas and their incorporation into modern recipes such as lattes, pastries and cocktails.
Health benefits
Like other green teas, hojicha is rich in antioxidants and beneficial compounds such as catechins, although the roasting process alters the concentration somewhat. Its benefits include:
Better digestion thanks to its soothing properties.
A relaxing effect due to its low caffeine content.
Aids general well-being thanks to its high theanine content.
This makes hojicha a tea for everyone, ideal for lovers of sweet, comforting flavors, and a gateway to the richness of Japanese teas.
